As of 1 January 2022, it is no longer possible to buy tickets from train attendants on long-distance services.
However, you can book a digital ticket on long-distance trains up to 10 minutes after departure (even if delayed). There is one condition: the train must travel for over 10 minutes between the station where you board and the following stop.
- Second class: second class tickets do not include a seat reservation. You can purchase a seat reservation with your ticket or separately at a later point of time.
- First class: first class tickets automatically include a seat reservation.

No, the ticket does not include a seat reservation. You can buy this either together with the ticket or separately later.
Yes. The City-Ticket is included free of charge for you in 140 cities. The "+City" on your ticket indicates that the City-Ticket option covers your start and destination stations.
You will receive a 25% discount with a BahnCard 25 and a 50% discount with a BahnCard 50. The My BahnCard 50 for young people up to and including the age of 26 is also available from 1 April to 31 July 2026 at a reduced price of € 64.99 (instead of € 79.90). So you can save twice as much!
You can only book this offer for journeys in the period from 1 April to 12 December 2026. You must travel part of the journey on ICE or IC/EC product class trains.

Eligibility is based on the passenger's age on the first day of travel, not on the day when the ticket is purchased. In the case of a return journey, eligibility is based on the passenger's age at the time of the first journey (outbound trip).
Government-issued ID cards are compulsory in Germany for people aged 16 and over. However, passengers can use a pupil's ID, passport or other form of photo ID as an alternative.
You can reserve a seat on any long-distance train. This costs EUR 4.90 in second class and EUR 5.90 in first class.
A free reservation is included when booking a first class ticket on the following trains:
- All long-distance trains within Germany.
- Long-distance cross-border trains, up to the station where you get off or change trains abroad.
If you change trains abroad, you will pay EUR 4.90 for second class and EUR 5.90 for first class seat reservations on subsequent trains.
Trains requiring seat reservations:
For trains requiring reservations, you will receive your seat reservation free of charge when you book your ticket. If you buy the reservation later, you will pay EUR 4.90 for the seat in second class and EUR 5.90 in first class.
Reservations are compulsory on some international services. If so, the reservation will already be included free of charge in the ticket price. Reservations are required in the following trains:
- France: high-speed trains (ICE and TGV) to Paris and Marseille (including all stopovers)
- Italy: Trains to Milan via Basel Bad Bf
- Poland: All long distance trains to Poland
Please note that you cannot travel on trains requiring reservations without a reservation, even if you have already purchased a flexible fare ticket including a reservation for another train.
Depending on the country, most trains can be booked up to 12 months before the day of travel and until shortly before the train's departure.
If the travel information does not show any connections, the date you selected is outside the current timetable period. The next timetable is usually released in mid-October, You can book your tickets after the release.

You receive a 25% discount with the BahnCard 25 or a 50% discount with the BahnCard 50 on the German part of the journey.
With a BahnCard 100 you receive a 100% discount on the German part of the journey (except France). Holders of a BahnCard 100 can take advantage of relations-dependent fixed prices for journeys on cross-border co-operation services to France.
Children up to 3 years of age always travel free of charge and do not need to be indicated when booking.
Children under the age of 6 always travel free of charge on the German section of the journey and do not have to be specified when booking. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge on the foreign section of the journey to Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Children aged 6-14 travel free of charge on the German and foreign sections of the journey when accompanied by someone aged 15 or over. However, they must be indicated in the booking. The ticket holder can bring up to four children per ticket. The age on the day of departure applies.
For journeys to France and Switzerland, children receive a 50% discount on the price paid by adults on the French and Swiss sections of the journey.

Children travelling on their own or accompanied:
Children pay a reduced fare for the trip from the age of either 4 or 6, depending on the country. Therefore, please indicate their age when booking. The age on the day of departure applies. In some countries, children travelling alone and persons accompanying them must be above a certain age. The next two questions provide more information.
In Germany, children and young people aged 15 and over pay the full fare. Abroad, children and young people pay the full price from the age of 12, 14, 15, 16 or 17, depending on the country:
- In Finland from the age of 17
- In Denmark, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland from the age of 16
- In Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic from the age of 15
- In Montenegro, Serbia and Hungary from 14 years of age
- In all other countries from 12 years of age

If the outward and return journeys are booked as a single ticket, this ticket is valid for a total of two days. This means you must start the return journey on the same day of the outward journey. We recommend booking one ticket per direction if necessary.
If the outward and return journeys are booked as two separate tickets, each ticket is valid for two days.
Please note:
If your outward and return journeys are no more than two days apart, you will get one ticket for both journeys.
If your outward and return journeys are more than two days apart, you will receive one ticket for each journey.
The flexible fare Europe allows you to interrupt your journey and continue it later under the following conditions:
- The outward and return journeys must be made within the validity period of two days stated on the ticket.
- The validity period of your ticket must not be exceeded.
- The departure and destination stations must not change.

- If you have a (super) saver fare ticket, you can only travel on the service indicated on the ticket. Offers are available for ICE/IC/EC connections within Germany.
- You can use local transport (e.g. RE, RB, IRE and S-Bahn or non-DB trains) to get to/from a long-distance station if you include them in your booking. You are not restricted to travelling on a specific train when using local rail services. However, your journey must be completed by 10:00 am the following day.
No. It is not possible to exchange or cancel this type of ticket.

When booking a (super) saver fare, the City-Ticket will be available separately for a fee depending on the specific departure or destination stop. This is subject to the following conditions:
- The departure or destination stop is in one of the approximately 130 City-Ticket towns and cities
- Your booking includes a journey to or from the long-distance service within the City-Ticket area using local transport
If you indicate in your booking enquiry that you only need DB long-distance trains (e.g. from Cologne Main Station to Berlin Central) and do not require a transfer within the City-Ticket area using local transport, the saver fare ticket will be issued without a City-Ticket.
No. A (super) saver fare ticket does not grant the holder access to a DB Lounge.
You can change or cancel your saver fare ticket before the first day of validity. The processing fee is EUR 10. We issue as a refund a voucher that is valid for 3 years. It is not possible to cancel a ticket on or after the day of travel.
If you have booked an outbound and return journey on a single ticket, the two journeys must be cancelled together. If you are unsure about one of the journeys, book the tickets separately.
To cancel your saver fare ticket, log in to your My Bahn customer account and go to "My last bookings". You can also use the order search function. Afterwards, you can book your new ticket as you normally would.

Every visitor to Venice must pay an access fee directly to the city government on certain days between 3 April and 26 July 2026. There are exemptions in certain cases. The specific days, terms of payment, exemptions and all other information can be found at https://cda.ve.it/en/.

If you want to enter or leave a station platform but the gates are closed, use the large square barcode at the top right of your online ticket to open them. Simply hold the barcode up to the scanner (illuminated section). The gate will open immediately. If you show your online ticket on a mobile device and have saved your credit card on this device, we recommend deactivating NFC to avoid an unintentional debit.

The super saver fare ticket for senior citizens can be booked in the regular travel information on our website and in our app DB Navigator. At the DB Travel Centre and agencies, the ticket can be purchased as a digital ticket.
If you are 65 or older on the first day of travel, you can purchase the super saver fare ticket for senior citizens.
The super saver fare ticket for senior citizens is currently only available for 2nd class.
Yes, but you have to book local transport when you buy your ticket. Tickets with local transport are available in a super saver fare for senior citizens. However, the offer is not available for local transport connections only.
If a delay of at least 20 minutes is expected at the destination, the journey can be continued on the same route, on a different route or at a later time.

- For group saver fares booked online, you can cancel the entire journey up to seven days before departure for EUR 19 per group ticket.

The regional day ticket for Bavaria lets you travel on all local trains and other means of transport within the area of validity.
The regional day ticket for Bavaria and regional night ticket for Bavaria are valid on the following services in Bavaria:
- All local trains operated by rail companies (e.g. DB's RE and RB trains, non-DB trains)
- All transport association services (S-Bahn, underground, trams, buses)
- Selected services operating in neighbouring states within Germany and in Austria
- Almost all scheduled bus services in Bavaria
- Please note that the regional day ticket for Bavaria is not valid on long-distance trains (ICE, IC).

The Deutschland-Ticket is the successor to the 9-Euro-Ticket, which was offered as a special measure in the summer months of 2022. The 9-Euro-Ticket was introduced by the German government to relieve the burden on people due to the sharp rise in costs for electricity, food, heating and mobility.
It was a great success and also helped the environment by encouraging greater use of public transport. As a result, the Deutschland-Ticket is to be offered as a permanent season ticket as part of the third federal relief package in cooperation between the federal and state governments.
As a flat rate for regional transport, the Deutschland-Ticket simplifies local transport fares by enabling travel across different states and tariff zones. It therefore makes it even easier to switch the car for more environmentally friendly means of transport.

You can cancel your Deutschland-Ticket yourself at any time, within the applicable cancellation periods, via the "Aboportal" or in the DB Navigator app.
You can cancel your Deutschland-Ticket subscription by the 10th of each month to the end of the calendar month. The best way to do this is to use our Aboportal (subscription portal) or the "Cancel subscription" function in the DB Navigator below your mobile phone ticket.
Unfortunately not. However, you can cancel your subscription yourself at any time in the "Aboportal" or in your mobile phone ticket. Alternatively, you can use our cancellation form to cancel at the earliest possible date. Please note the standard notice period. A Deutschland-Ticket subscription can be cancelled up to the 10th calendar day of a month with effect from the end of that month.
Customers can purchase the Deutschland-Ticket via DB sales channels and the DB Navigator app, as well as at DB Travel Centres throughout Germany. Many other transport companies will also sell the Deutschland-Ticket in their sales channels.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be used throughout Germany in all regional and local trains. It is also valid for any number of journeys in all means of public transport of the participating regional ticketing systems, transport associations and transport companies according to their area of validity and conditions. This is true regardless of which transport company, association or regional ticketing system is indicated on the ticket. A Deutschland-Ticket purchased in Munich, for example, can therefore also be used for journeys in Frankfurt and the surrounding area.
Please note, however, that the Deutschland-Ticket is not valid on trains operated by DB Fernverkehr AG or other long-distance providers such as FlixTrain (e.g. IC, EC, ICE, as well as RE operated by DB Fernverkehr AG). DB Fernverkehr is currently in talks with the German state governments and authorities about exceptions on certain sections of line.
The Deutschland-Ticket is currently also permitted for long-distance trains (IC, EC, ICE) between Rostock Hbf and Stralsund Hbf.
Furthermore, the Deutschland-Ticket is not valid on means of transport that are operated predominantly for tourist or historical purposes.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be used throughout Germany on all local trains such as RB, RE, S-Bahn trains (SPNV) and also on public transport such as buses, trams, subways, etc. (ÖPNV) of the participating state tariffs, transit authorities and transport companies in accordance with the area of validity and their conditions for any number of journeys. This applies regardless of which transport company, transit authority or national tariff is noted on the ticket itself. A Deutschland-Ticket purchased in Munich, for example, can therefore also be used for journeys in Frankfurt and the surrounding area.
Please note, however, that the Deutschland-Ticket is generally not valid on trains operated by DB Fernverkehr AG or other long-distance providers such as FlixTrain (e.g. IC, EC, ICE, but also RE of DB Fernverkehr AG). DB Fernverkehr is currently in talks with the federal states and local transport authorities about exceptions on certain sections of the route.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be used before and after a long distance train. However, a separate ticket is then always required for the long-distance route. This has an impact on any passenger rights. If you miss the connecting long distance train, the train connection is not canceled and no refund claims can be made.
Furthermore, the Deutschland-Ticket is not valid on means of transport that are operated primarily for tourist or historical purposes.
If your mobile phone ticket is no longer displayed, you can add the travelcard again at any time under "Travel" using the travelcard number from your activation email.
Please note: If you order a new travelcard, you will incur additional costs for the new travelcard contract.
From the new version (from 24.1) of DB Navigator, you will only see the mobile phone ticket for the currently valid month. The validity period on the mobile phone ticket is automatically updated at the change of month on the existing ticket. No additional ticket is displayed for the following month.
The message "Tickets up to [date] are already on your device" means that the update for the new month will take place automatically on the first of the month.
There may be a delay before the period is updated in the ticket preview under "Travel". Please open the ticket so that the QR code is visible. The current period is displayed on the ticket. This display is relevant for use and control.

Children under 6 travel for free. They do not need a ticket. Children aged 6 and over need their own ticket, e.g. their own Deutschland-Ticket. They cannot travel free of charge.
No, you cannot take any other persons with you on a Deutschland-Ticket. Your fellow passengers need their own ticket.
Any such rights from an existing subscription cannot be transferred to the Deutschland-Ticket.
The Deutschland-Ticket does not include the carriage of dogs that are subject to fees. You cannot purchase a Deutschland-Ticket for a dog that is subject to a fee. You must purchase a valid ticket for dogs for the line you use or the tariff area through which you travel. In addition, the respective regulations of the regional ticketing systems, transport associations and transport companies apply to the carriage of dogs. Please check the rules for the relevant tariff area.
Bicycle transport is subject to the respective tariff regulations of the nationwide ticketing system (Deutschlandtarif), the regional ticketing systems, transport associations and transport companies. If bicycles can be taken along free of charge at the time of travel on the line you use or in the tariff area through which you travel, you can also do so with the Deutschland-Ticket. If a bicycle ticket is required for a tariff area, this also applies to journeys with the Deutschland-Ticket. In exceptional cases,
- if a cancellation or train delay affects the last connection of the day with arrival by midnight a delay
- or cancellation occurs on a train connection with scheduled arrival between 0 a.m. and 5 a.m.
- and the delay at the destination is at least 60 minutes the use of an ICE or IC/EC train is also possible within the framework of the regulations of §11 Para. 2 of the Railway Traffic Ordinance (EVO).
The following also applies in this case: You must first purchase a separate ticket for the use of ICE or IC/EC trains, the fare for which will then be reimbursed up to an amount of 120 euros as part of the settlement of passenger rights.
If you are travelling with your Deutschland-Ticket and arrive at your destination at least 60 minutes late due to a local train being delayed or cancelled, you are entitled to compensation of EUR 1.50 per case. Please note, however, that compensation amounts below EUR 4 will not be paid out due to a statutory de minimis threshold. However, you can submit several compensation requests together to the Deutsche Bahn passenger rights service centre or the passenger rights department of the rail transport company you use during the term of your Deutschland-Ticket, and receive compensation from them. A maximum of 25% of the value of your Deutschland-Ticket will be compensated.
The Deutschland-Ticket can be used before and after a journey on a long-distance train. However, a separate ticket is always required for the long-distance journey. This may have implications for passenger rights. If you miss the long-distance train you have booked following your journey on a local/regional service, you are not entitled to travel on another train with the same ticket and cannot claim a refund.
Exchanges and refunds of the Deutschland-Ticket are possible free of charge before the first day of validity of the ticket and are excluded thereafter.

The federal and state governments agreed to offer the Deutschland-Ticket as a subscription product. It is valid nationwide and enables journeys throughout Germany on local public transport and regional rail transport operated by all participating transport companies and transport associations, and across all regional fare systems, even areas not included in an association.
Overview
The Deutschland-Ticket's fare regulations are standardised for the whole of Germany. The subscription ticket is person-specific and therefore non-transferable.
- Price: EUR 63 per month
- Contract period: Can be cancelled monthly. If a customer cancels the ticket by the 10th day of the month, the subscription ends on the last day of the same month. Cancellation after the 10th day means the subscription ends on the last day of the following month.

The original second class ticket remains valid and is still required for ticket inspection on the train. The first class upgrade covers the price of the change to first class and supplements the second class ticket, but does not replace it.
If you have a first class BahnCard 25/50, you will receive the usual 25% or 50% discount when booking the first class upgrade. A second class BahnCard does not grant a discount when booking the first class upgrade. Yes, Komfort Check-in is possible. To check in to a first class seat, select the upgrade ticket and complete the Komfort Check-in process as usual. Please note that train attendants occasionally have to carry out spot checks. The checked-in seats chosen for this are randomly selected by the system (in some cases depending on the ticket) and displayed on the inspection device.

The providers offering shared bike and scooter services all have their own business regions; the availability of sharing services is dependent on what they offer.
DB is interested in entering into further partnerships with such providers. We are, however, currently unable to provide any specific information on when additional services may be available.
The price for renting a bike or scooter is made up of the basic rate and an activation fee charged by the respective sharing provider; these are taken from the pricing given by the provider in their app.
If you have tapped on a bike or scooter on the map to select it, further information on it will be displayed on a new page. On this page, you will find the symbol of a person on the right-hand side of the map. You can use this symbol to display the walking route from your current location to the rental vehicle.
The walking route to a bike or scooter can only be displayed if the distance walking from your location to the vehicle is no more than five kilometres.
If you have an accident involving a bicycle or scooter, please always contact the responsible service provider directly.
You can reassign an ICE or IC/EC group ticket to a different passenger. Reassigning the ticket allows the name of the main passenger to be changed for either direction on the group ticket originally booked. This offer is available for DB long-distance tickets, but not for regional tickets.
Tickets for long-distance trains (FR, FA, FB, IC, ICN) include seat reservations. On these trains, the ticket is only valid for the booked journey.

After completing the booking, you will receive a PDF document on which is printed "Not valid for travel", as well as an e-mail containing a booking confirmation from Trenitalia in addition to that issued by DB. The PDF alone does not entitle you to travel.

Reservations are generally unusual in Switzerland, as there are usually enough seats available. A small contingent of reservable seats is available on most long-distance trains. These can also be booked via DB. If no reservation is available, this does not necessarily mean that you will not get a seat.
An exception to this are journeys in special panoramic carriages, such as those on the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express. Reservations are compulsory on these trains.
Reservations are also compulsory for cross-border journeys on EC trains between Switzerland and Italy. You can book journeys on these trains as a Trenitalia ticket.

This depends on when SNCF begins sales, but is usually up to four months before the planned journey. SNCF sets specific dates for the Christmas, winter, spring and summer holidays in France.
You can book any journey with SNCF long-distance trains within France. Simply search for your desired connection in the travel information.
- TGV – e.g. from Paris to Nice in around six hours or from Paris to Bordeaux in around two hours
- Intercités – e.g. from Marseille to Narbonne in around 2:30 hours
In addition to long-distance trains, you can book connections with TER regional trains in many regions of France. In future, connections with the Intercités night trains will also be bookable in the couchette coach.
Tickets for many cross-border trains can also be booked as SNCF tickets. These include:
- TGV between Spain and France – e.g. from Barcelona to Paris in around 6:50 hours
- TGV between Switzerland and France – e.g. from Basel to Paris in around three hours
- TGV between Italy and France – e.g. from Milan to Paris in around seven hours

Journeys on long-distance trains:

- In addition to connections with long-distance trains, you can book tickets for regional trains to almost all destinations in Austria's attractive tourist regions.
You can also book tickets for many cross-border trains as ÖBB tickets. These include:
- Railjet between the Czech Republic and Austria – e.g. from Prague to Vienna in around 4:15 hours
- Railjet between Hungary and Austria – e.g. from Budapest to Vienna in around 2:40 hours
- Eurocity between Austria and Slovenia/Croatia – e.g. from Villach to Ljubljana in around two hours, or from Villach to Zagreb in around 4:30 hours

- Travelling to or from London requires additional passenger data ("Advance Passenger Information"). The ticket will only be issued after this additional data has been entered. Further information is available on the Eurostar website.
- When travelling by Eurostar to or from London, you must check in at the station. Check-in times vary depending on the station. You will find these on your ticket.
- Please observe the current entry requirements for Great Britain and for the countries you are travelling through.
- Boarding: if travelling on TGV and ICE trains in France, please board at least two minutes before departure. This is the only way the trains can depart on time. It is also the only way you are guaranteed to get on and travel.
- Luggage tags: you must label your luggage with a luggage tag bearing your name. This is compulsory on all trains to and in France. Luggage tags are required for all items of luggage that you store in luggage racks at the end of the carriage, or above and between the seats. This regulation does not apply to your personal items, such as your hand luggage
Assistance dogs can travel free of charge. However, you must book a ticket directly via Eurostar at least 24 hours before departure.
Cancellation: if you purchased your ticket at a DB Travel Centre, please contact them. If you booked online and have a 12-digit order number, you can cancel your ticket directly on bahn.de via "My Trips".
Exchange: visit eurostar.com "Manage your booking" and have the 6-digit PNR ready.
You can book almost all routes with SJ trains within Sweden. Some cross-border connections are also available, such as to Norway. Simply search for your desired connection in the travel information.
Journeys on long-distance trains:
- X2 high-speed train – e.g. from Stockholm to Gothenburg in around 3:30 hours
- InterCity – e.g. from Oslo to Stockholm in around 5:50 hours
As well as connections with long-distance trains, you can also book tickets to attractive destinations with SJ regional trains.
Would you like to travel in comfort overnight? Night trains with comfortable couchette and sleeping compartments are also bookable, such as from Stockholm to Luleå or Narvik (from mid-April 2026 with a transfer in Boden).

When traveling on SJ night trains, you generally book a private compartment in the couchette and sleeping cars. This means that you will only share your compartment with other people from your booking. First-class compartments are not available on all connections.

In D trains, breakfast is included in the first class sleeping car. This can be picked up from the train's bistro until 9:00 am. On some trains, breakfast is offered after arrival at the destination near the station. For more information, please ask the train crew.
There may be various reasons for this. For example:
- The connection you have selected is too far in the future. We at DB have extended our advance purchase deadline for long-distance services to up to 12 months. This extension does not apply to international and overnight train journeys with other carriers. Here, the advance booking deadline is usually three to six months.
- Your selected connection is affected by construction work and the timetable is still being adjusted.
- One of the external booking systems involved is currently unavailable.
Our tip: Try again in a few days. This is often only a temporary problem.
For international journeys, we at DB currently sell only the ticket for your selected connection with other carriers. For additional services, please contact the respective rail company directly or go to a ticket counter at the station.
Please have your ticket ready for inspection together with a photographic ID (we recommend an identity card or passport). Most carriers also accept your ticket in electronic form on a mobile device. Nevertheless, we still recommend printing out the ticket in case you have problems with your device.

If booking an ÖBB ticket: In Austria, your ticket is also recognised in digital form. For journeys outside Austria and cross-border journeys, please print your ticket on white A4 paper in portrait format.
If booking a Trenitalia ticket: For ticket inspections on long-distance trains (Frecciarossa/Frecciagento/Frecciabianca/InterCity), simply provide the six-digit Trenitalia booking code (PNR) from the booking confirmation. For inspections on local and regional trains, please refer to the check-in information in the Trenitalia booking confirmation.
If booking a Eurostar ticket to/from London: After purchasing your ticket, you will receive a booking confirmation for your Eurostar connection with a link to where you can enter additional legally required information. The booking confirmation does not constitute a valid ticket. After entering the requested information, you will receive your ticket from Eurostar.

For international bookings, you must enter your correct age so that the international fare can be calculated and country-specific age limits can be taken into account. Some international rail companies also require your date of birth in order to calculate the best fare.
With a few exceptions, it is currently only possible to reserve a specific seat during the booking process for DB trains. We plan to provide this option for international journeys in future.
Outside Germany, departure platforms are often only announced shortly before the train departs. Therefore, please pay attention to the platform displays and announcements at the station.
In general, each rail company (carrier) is responsible for its own section of the journey. If there are delays and you have multiple tickets (separate contracts of carriage), the next rail company on a booked itinerary is not obliged to let you travel with them using the ticket for another train. If this happens, however, the rail companies are usually accommodating to each other and will also let you travel as a customer on an alternative train at no extra cost. However, your seat reservation will no longer be valid in such a case. If you arrive late at your destination due to delays or cancellations, the EU-wide rail passenger rights apply.

You can cancel each ticket individually in accordance with the fare regulations. To do this, call up your booking under "My trips". The cancellation options you have for each individual ticket are displayed under "Cancel". Please note: If you wish to cancel your trip completely, you may have to go through the cancellation process several times in order to cancel all tickets in accordance with the respective fare regulations.
By order of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the German Federal Police are carrying out border controls throughout Germany.
There are passport inspections on all international ICE, EC, ECE, IC, RJ, TGV and NJ trains operated by Deutsche Bahn when they enter Germany.
