Historical landmarks amidst green vineyards

Trier is a German city on the banks of the Moselle near the Luxembourg border. It is nestled between the hills of an important wine region and may well be Germany's oldest city, with many famous landmarks dating back to Roman times. The Porta Nigra is a well-preserved Roman city gate, and there are ruins of three Roman baths. The Constantine Basilica was the throne hall of Roman emperor Constantine, and there is also an amphitheatre. The Roman bridge dates back to the 2nd century AD and is still used by traffic. Even the Trier Cathedral has Roman origins and is also home to the Holy Tunic, a garment said to have been worn by Jesus when he died.

Museums, hiking, boat cruises and much more

For more information about Trier in Roman times, you can visit the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. Other museums have exhibitions about, among other things, the history of Trier and the personal life of Karl Marx. Nature lovers can take to the hills surrounding Trier, which provide excellent opportunities for hiking, or take a boat tour on the Moselle River to see the vineyards from a different perspective. Trier is easily accessible by train, with many links provided by Deutsche Bahn to nearby cities such as Cologne, Saarbrücken and Luxembourg. The city itself is small enough to conquer on foot, which is the best way to discover its Roman and medieval footprint. One thing is certain, Trier won't disappoint!
